    Local Publisher Donates $1,000 for Writers in the Schools

    Eagle, ID - Mill Park Publishing of Eagle has donated $1,000 to the Writers in the Schools Program sponsored by The Cabin, a literary center in Boise. The donation comes from sales of the new novel The Angel of Esperança by local author Judith McConnell Steele.

    “The donation will enable The Cabin to have a literary instructor in another area school,” said Julie Strand, program director. “We appreciate this opportunity to bring professional writers into the classrooms to engage students and classroom teachers in the pleasure and power of reading and writing.”

    Mill Park Publishing was founded by author Elaine Ambrose. The company publishes books written by women and donates the proceeds to local charities. More than $10,000 has been given over the past four years and recipients include Dress for Success Treasure Valley, the Women’s and Children’s Alliance, the Learning Lab Literature for Lunch, and the Interfaith Sanctuary.

    Mill Park Publishing won four of 40 awards given recently by the Idaho Book Extravaganza. The Angel of Esperança won first place awards for fiction, interior design, and cover design. Drinking with Dead Women Writers, historical fiction by AK Turner and Elaine Ambrose, won second place for cover design. Other books have won prestigious awards, including the 2012 Independent Book Publisher Award (IPPY), a national humor award from Foreword Magazine, and a designation as “Best New Children’s Book.”

*All attendees will submit a 10 page, double-spaced manuscript for critique (deadline December 31st), as well as a list of your social media sites, websites, and blog(s). Attendees are also welcome to bring a 5 minute piece to read aloud at the retreat.

Speakers

A.K. Turner
A.K. Turner is a coauthor (along with Elaine Ambrose) ofDrinking with Dead Women Writers and Drinking with Dead Drunks. Her "Tales of Imperfection" series includes This Little Piggy Went to the Liquor Store and Mommy had a Little Flask. She currently at work on a third book in the series, Hair of the Corn Dog. Publisher's Weekly describes Turner as "sincere, laugh-out-loud," and "refreshingly honest." She served as a writer-in-residence for the city of Boise, created "The Writers' Block" on Radio Boise, has published both fiction and nonfiction in a variety of publications and anthologies, and taught the Tenacious Writer Studio Series.

Elaine Ambrose
Elaine Ambrose is a writer, publisher, and blogger who organizes writing retreats and donates proceeds from book sales to various charities. She is an author of nine books including the national bestseller Menopause Sucks. Elaine's blog "Midlife Cabernet" is published on several websites including BlogHer and Project Eve. Her company, Mill Park Publishing, publishes books written by women and the company recently won the Independent Publisher Book Award (IPPY) and a humor award from Foreword Magazine. Christy Hovey
Christy writes for The Urban Liaison magazine and is the Idaho coordinator for National Novel Writing Month. Her first book, Finding Joy in the Midst of Autism is set to release January 2014. She owns several businesses and has been nominated for the Idaho Business Review's Women of the Year 2014 Award. One of her companies, My Social Media Ghost, teaches businesses and individuals strategies to build their platform via social media. She has four children, including one with special needs. She is passionate about teaching women how to find their voice and how to overcome limiting beliefs.

Moving your Novel from your Head to your Hand

A Workshop at The Cabin

Judith McConnell Steele, author and poet, and Elaine Ambrose, author and publisher, will present a three-hour workshop on writing and publishing a novel. The workshop will be Saturday, November 16 from 10:00 am until 1:00 pm at The Cabin located at 801 S. Capitol Blvd. in Boise.

The cost is $35 – or $30 for Cabin members – and includes an autographed copy of The Angel of Esperança, written by Steele and published by Ambrose’s Mill Park Publishing.

Steele will facilitate short writing exercises for participants, and she also will describe her journey from writing her manuscript to holding the finished book. Ambrose will discuss format, designs, reviews, promotion, and costs of publication.

The workshop is open to writers beginning a novel as well as those with completed manuscripts. Participants should bring a few pages of their novel they want to rework, their writing instrument of choice, and a willingness to explore. Space is limited, so please complete the registration form and mail before November 8. There will be registration at the door if space is available. The workshop is sponsored by The Cabin and Mill Park Publishing. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of the novel will be donated to the Writers in the Schools Program sponsored by The Cabin.
